Gazing over the Grand Indian Ocean , it will not take a very long time to spot a range of different vessels sailing the turquoise tropical waters. Fishermen busy sailing their boats for the days' fishing. Merchants moving their cargo to and from distant places.

The way it has been done for many centuries.

A type of vessel used is a Dhow (or Mashua). Dhows are hand made, constructed by skillful craftsmen by means of basic hand tools using water-resistant timbers. These skills originating from ancient Persia and have been passed on for thousands of years. Various influences from different historic civilizations like Arab, Indo-Malayan, Indian and Portuguese have been adapted into the Swahili culture. This blend gives the dhows their present time character and appearance.

Experience the sensation of dhow-sailing yourself!

Located on Dar es Salaam 's South beaches at Kipepeo Beach , you can do just that! Dekeza Dhows offers a Day excursion taking you out to offshore islands. Daily sailing trips take off sailing to the nearby uninhabited islands.
